Created by Celadet Alî Bedirxan, Kurdish prince and linguist, in the Hawar magazine published in Damascus.

8 vowels + 23 consonants. Designed to accurately represent every sound of Kurmanji.

Unique sounds absent from French and Turkish, specific to the Kurdish language.

Did you know?
Turkey only officially recognised the letters Q, W and X in 2013. Yet the Hawar alphabet has been using them since 1932 — a detail that tells nearly a century of cultural history.
Voices that shaped our language
From classical poets to pioneers of modern writing
Melayê Cizîrî
First great Kurdish poet. His Dîwan (~120 poems) marks the birth of classical Kurmanji literature.
Ehmedê Xanî
Author of the national epic Mem û Zîn (1692) and the first Kurdish-Arabic dictionary for children (1683).
Hacî Qadirê Koyî
Poet and intellectual who called for Kurdish unity and education. Considered an awakener of national consciousness.
Celadet Alî Bedirxan
Kurdish linguist and prince. Created the Hawar alphabet (1932) in Damascus, basis of modern written Kurmanji.
Cigerxwîn
Father of modern Kurdish poetry. Author of eight collections and engaged witness of his century.
Osman Sebrî
Writer, journalist and activist. Central collaborator of Hawar and defender of the Kurdish language throughout the 20th century.
Nûredîn Zaza
Pioneer of the Kurmanji short story and major figure of Hawar. His autobiography is a key testimony of the 20th century.
Mehmed Uzun
Father of the contemporary Kurdish novel. Author of seven novels that brought Kurdish literature to the world.
